Archetype, Affect, and the Architecture of Mental Representation

Course Description

This seminar offers an in-depth exploration of the harmonic levels of mental representation as articulated in Integrated Analytical Psychology. Participants will examine the developmental continuum spanning from archetypal probability fields to the consolidated sense of self, through the nested sequence of symbol, object, complex, and schema. Drawing on psychoanalytic, Jungian, and emergentist perspectives, this model frames personality development as a process of increasing complexity and integration. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of affect as a motivational force in development, the function of harmonic vectors as thematic attractors, and the clinical relevance of defensive “dissipators” that interrupt progression. Attendees will gain tools for mapping intrapsychic structure, recognizing developmental disruptions, and identifying therapeutic leverage points across the harmonic layers.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the six harmonic levels of mental representation and their developmental sequence within the Integrated Analytical model.
  • Identify the clinical significance of harmonic vectors and defensive dissipators in assessing personality development and psychopathology.
  • Apply the harmonic model to clinical vignettes, demonstrating how to locate psychic material within specific levels and identify therapeutic interventions appropriate to that layer.
